St Andrew’s Care Homes is a family business that’s been going since 1988. It’s run by managing director Chris Ryan, who took over from his parents in 1996 – mum Margaret still serves as a director. Elcombe House in Bedford has been run by Chris since 1998, and Danecroft in Wilstead since 2006.
Chris, a qualified nurse, is a committed advocate of dementia care. He’s trustee of the local charity TIBBS Dementia Foundation and has served as a member of the Steering Committee for dementia strategy in Bedfordshire. He’s also a former chair of the Bedfordshire branch of the Alzheimer’s Society.
At Elcombe House, Chris is the registered manager and is assisted by his two fully qualified deputies, Kerri Trudgill and Teresa Stokes. The registered manager of Danecroft is Salina Ballard, who works with her fully qualified deputy, Rebecca Ward.
Staff at both homes undergo regular dementia training, both internally and externally. In association with the local authority St Andrew’s Care Homes also nominate special ‘champions’. These are staff who’ve shown a particular interest in a specific area of care and are given specialist training.
St Andrew’s Care Homes is consistently rated ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission

‘Staff were not offered employment until satisfactory checks had been completed. Staff received an induction process and on-going training. They had attended a variety of training to ensure they were able to provide care based on current best practice when supporting people. They were supported with regular supervisions.’
